If you have been told you need gynecologic surgery, you owe it to yourself to seek out the most advanced laparoscopic treatment available. At James River Obstetrics & Gynecology, our board-certified gynecologist physicians are experts in the latest minimally invasive techniques that lessen the discomfort, downtime, and recovery period following a surgical procedure. Laparoscopy is a technique that allows the surgeon to view the abdominal and pelvic organs using a thin, lighted tube inserted via tiny incisions. Besides minimizing discomfort and hastening recovery, laparoscopic treatments offer a more appealing cosmetic result over “open” surgery. Some of the laparoscopic procedures we perform are:
If you suffer from prolonged or heavy bleeding, you know how disruptive it can be to enjoying everyday life. The good news is there have never been more options for treating heavy bleeding. Because there can be many different causes, getting a correct diagnosis is the first step in finding the treatment right for you. Our board-certified ob/gyns offer the full range of diagnostic testing to pinpoint the cause of your condition.
Your treatment begins after you have a thorough understanding of all the medical options available to you. Some of these may not be viable options if you want to become pregnant in the future. Regardless of your reproductive preferences, our physicians offer a full range of treatments, such as hormone therapy and implantable contraceptives, that can end heavy bleeding and bring lasting relief.
We also offer a variety of simple, in-office procedures for women who have completed their families or do not wish to become pregnant. Endometrial ablation is a safe, effective treatment for heavy bleeding that can be performed in an outpatient setting. Some techniques allow endometrial ablation to be performed in just minutes, including NovaSure® and Thermachoice®. Women who undergo endometrial ablation sometimes experience very light periods — or no periods at all.
In some cases, a hysterectomy may be the only option. Our board-certified ob/gyns are experts in the latest minimally invasive surgical techniques that minimize the discomfort, downtime, and recovery following hysterectomy. In fact, we were one of the first ob/gyn groups in the area to offer total laparoscopic hysterectomy and laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy. Typically, patients require less pain medication and are able to get back to work faster after these procedures when compared to traditional hysterectomy methods. Next, vaginal hysterectomy offers similar patient benefits; it is a much less invasive approach than traditional hysterectomy that involves a tiny incision and offers a rapid recovery time.
If indicated, a laparoscopic hysterectomy will be recommended. This procedure requires only tiny incisions, so the recovery time is shorter and scarring is minimized.
